OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Ravens may be close to adding that elusive recipient for free agents.
Former Chiefs Sammy Watkins is on his way to Baltimore to visit the team, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Watkins will reportedly meet with the Ravens on March 23, then travel to Indianapolis and speak to the Colts the next day. The Tennessee Titans have an interest in him too.
Watkins is widely recognized as one of the best free agent recipients in the free agent market. T.Y. Hilton and Larry Fitzgerald are also still available.
Some of the other top players have found new homes in the past two weeks.
Kenny Golladay has signed a four-year $ 72 million deal with the New York Giants, according to multiple reports. Former Houston Texans beneficiary Will Fuller has a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins with a base salary of $ 990,000 and incentives of up to $ 3 million. The Jacksonville Jaguars have a two-year contract with Marvin Jones Jr.AJ for 14 , Closed $ 5 Million Green has agreed to a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals valued at up to $ 8.5 million. Baltimore reached out to JuJu Smith-Schuster, who declined his $ 9.5 million offer to stay in Pittsburgh for $ 8 million.
The Ravens led the Ravens to aggressively pursue Sammy Watkins in an attempt to reinforce a temporary attack that finished last in the NFL last season.
Watkins was a highly regarded player from Clemson and was the Buffalo Bills' fourth choice in the 2014 draft. He also spent a season with the Rams (2017) before signing with the Kansas City Chiefs.
In 86 career games, Watkins has caught 321 passes for 4,665 yards with 33 touchdowns. He turns 28 on June 14, so he's got a lot of solid football ahead of him. Watkins has the speed of getting behind secondaries and does an effective job of gaining yards after a reception.
However, Watkins has dealt with injuries throughout his career. Last season he missed six games with a calf injury. Over the course of his career, Watkins has missed 26 games due to injury and only played once in all 16 games – his rookie year in Buffalo.
Last season, he finished 10 receptions with 37 receptions on 55 targets for 421 yards and two touchdowns. Watkins has also been prone to a few drops over the past couple of seasons.
Watkins would be affordable at around $ 10 million per season. At this point, however, the Ravens could only target the draft to add a playful receiver.
