With the passing of legendary Baltimore sportscaster Vince Bagli on Tuesday at the age of 93, it got me thinking about Bagli’s legacy and where it fits into the history of Baltimore media.
Not only was he the sports director at WBAL-TV for three-plus decades, but Bagli also spent years broadcasting Baltimore Colts games, providing color commentary and insight along with iconic lead play-by-play man Chuck Thompson. And Bagli was a sportswriter too, cutting his teeth at the Baltimore News-American.
To me, the late Thompson is the standard-bearer in Baltimore media. Bagli and John Steadman, the longtime sportswriter and editor who also provided color commentary for Colts broadcasts at times, are right there in the conversation.
After those three, boy, there are a lot of names I could throw at you.
