A Baltimore sports icon will play a key role in advising a national gambling firm as sports betting continues to take shape in Maryland.Cal Ripken Jr. has been appointed as a special adviser to the board of directors of DraftKings, a digital sports entertainment and gaming company.”We look forward to the opportunity, hopefully soon, to roll out DraftKings’ sportsbook in Maryland,” said Matt Kalish, one of the co-founders of DraftKings.Kalish told 11 News that Ripken, the now successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, will be able to offer strategic insight into the world of Major League Baseball and beyond.”I think his insight into the baseball fanbase, the league has been instrumental, so having him around the table of our board of directors and talking with management is really shaping a lot of how we think about not only fantasy, but moving forward into the sports-betting space,” Kalish said.Ripken will also advise the board and CEO on product development and marketing strategies, which will become key as competition intensifies for sports gambling in Maryland.And Ripken will be in good company on the board.”He’s sitting next to Michael Jordan now as one of our strategic advisers, so I think we’re building a really great bench of advisers who could really help us get to the next level as a company,” Kalish said.Ripken told 11 News in a statement: “I am honored to bring my experience to DraftKings through this special adviser position and become part of a company that is already essential for fan engagement while still only scratching the surface of its full potential.”Ripken won’t have any time to waste as his special advisory status is effective immediately.
