Baltimore Metropolis Well being Division loses first worker to coronavirus

A Baltimore City Health Department employee has died of the coronavirus, city officials announced Friday. It is the first death from the virus within the health department.

“Our hearts are extremely heavy today,” Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young said. “On behalf of the residents of Baltimore, I offer sincere condolences to our staff member’s family, loved ones, and members of the Baltimore City Health Department.”

The unidentified staffer had worked for the health department since 2006 and served in the department’s Bureau of School Health.

“This is a terrible loss to the Health Department. My thoughts and prayers go out to our staff member’s family and friends,” Health Commissioner Dr. Letitia Dzirasa said.

As of Friday, the coronavirus has claimed 3,845 lives statewide, with 345 deaths in Baltimore City, according to state figures.
